tronglight invented the square taper BB. It was the beginning of a long and honourable history of pioneering design and solid componentry. For instance, the classic 49D still has staunch adherents among cycletourists--an amazing record for a crankset introduced in 1949. During the 90s the company seemed to lose momentum, but in the last couple of years it has fought back strongly. We are big fans of Stronglight's present range of cranks.
ST-1000 | ST-1000/170 | IMPACT

The ST-1000 is Stronglight's pure track crank. It is short, light and stiff, with mountings for only one ring. It uses a standard square taper BB, which is still the way to go for most non-MTB setups. And it takes roadie 130mm rings, which makes it easy to set up smaller gears for commuting. Stronglight claim a 107mm JIS BB will give a 'true' 42mm chainline. That wasn't our experience, but, if you ride a 120-spaced bike, you will likely have an easier time dialling in a track crank like this than you would a repurposed singlespeed set. We normally stock the ST-1000 in four different configurations: 40 or 44t (3/32"), 44 or 48t (1/8"), although we presently have some extra sizes in 3/32. The stock 3/32 rings are Stronglight's standard road production, but the 1/8 rings are from the upmarket Zicral series. (This makes them rather pricy, although excellently durable.) We can obtain other rings, including the Teflon-coated timetrial ones, on custom order -- or you can buy the bare arms if you prefer to source your own rings and mounting bolts.

Stronglight's Impact is a rebadged version of the venerable Sugino XD mountain crank. (Look at the casting marks on the zoomed view if you don't believe us -- or amble over to the Sugino page, where you will find the originals for comparison.) Stronglight sell it as one of the newfangled 110BCD 'compact doubles'. It's certainly sleek enough for a roadbike, although resolutely squaretaper. We don't carry Stronglight's stock rings, but, if you add one of our Surly stainless rings to your Impact order, we'll give you a set of single chainring bolts for free. Hurrah!
