ubjub has a reputation for sourcing unusual kit. We maintain a steady trade in custom order items, often things that have nothing to do with our core offering. Some of them stick, to the point where we've had to run a temporary eBay storefront for the last few Christmasses to thin out. We're developing the Skunkworks as a way to keep that going all year round. You're looking at version 0.1, the roughest and simplest it is ever going to be. We'll be updating regularly and we'll try to Twitter the more interesting additions, but please come back anyway just to watch us grow.

Swiss Army hat presented by Hubjub.co.uk

COMENGETIT
Choose:

£8.00

Cold ears? Swiss Army hat! If it works up an alp it'll work in Godalming, even in January. The SA hat is a classic design of felt and synthetic wool and the long flaps can be worn loose, poppered snugly under the chin, or secured across the top of the head as in the zoomed view. (The zoom doesn't show the full-on Robin Williams / 'Fisher King', where you turn up the rim so that the flaps dangle an inch clear of the head on either side, but you can guess the effect.) The SA hat has been hard to source in the EU for a couple of years, and our primo quality examples are available in two sizes, medium and large. We won't even mention the nylon clones you can buy in Asda... Presently medium (57) only, and those are selling fast...

Small image of some Hypnotic Designs clothing presented by Hubjub.co.uk

£see zoom

Sorted Cycles (RIP) used to distribute Hypnotic Designs (RIP too). The company closed its doors when the founder had twins. (Ahem. Hypnotic had the twins. The Sorted guys are happy with Drum'n'Bass, their cats.) Anyways, Hypnotic was always favoured for its combination of high utility with pub-friendly looks, and quite a few of us mourned its passing. It turned out that Sorted were holding a stash which they've now asked us to sell on. So here they are -- Hayestack jackets and Lefty Lucy shorts, in various sizes and colours. Click on the image to see the range. The stock of Hanxster shorts went almost as soon as we listed them, so get in quick if you're keen.

Small image of the Burls Ti Courier, a titanium fixed gear frame presented by Hubjub.co.uk

FRAME ON!

We launched the Ti Courier four years ago. Justin Burls, a talented framebuilder, had begun building his designs in Russia. We intended the Courier as a simple, no-options frame in plaingauge titanium to use up some of his spare production capacity. We'd cheerfully put it up against any streetfix on the market, and most owners seem to love theirs. Justin's growing order list and the high cost of raw materials meant that we had to abandon the project after the first three runs. There will be no more Ti Couriers, but we still have a couple of frames in size 'small' on the shelf from batch #2. You can see the geometry on the linked page, along with some photos and a blurb from launch. Justin reckons that a similar design built today would sell for more than a grand, so, if you're a smaller person, these are a fair old bargain. Sold out, STC.

LeVeL Components rear hub

F+R!

£195.00

We have a long relationship with LeVeL hubs -- in fact, Will has been riding a prototype set on- and offroad for five years now. The company was the first to bring a non-threaded fixed cog to market. In place of the trad system is a cog which fits snugly over lugs projecting from the hub shell and is then secured with three TorX bolts. This enables a very positive lock while still allowing you to swap sprockets with a tiny pocket driver. Also remarkable is the hub's respaceability. Using handtools, you can reconfigure your LeVeL for a 120 or 135mm bike in a few minutes. Scott, the designer, has been working hard in the Gulf for a couple of years, and supplies have been scarce. Things are going to be changing in 2012, and Scott is streamlining some aspects of his operation. Right now, we have extremely limited stock of hubsets (front and rear only; no splits) plus a batch of the excellent stainless cogs. You get a freebie cog if you buy a hubset -- we'll contact you to find out what size you want. If you want one of the stock cogs, or a respacer kit, drop us a note.

Sturmey S2C with kickback brake

KICK IT!
£68.00

This is the Sturmey S2C, billed as a 'fixie killer' by some over-excitable bloggers. It's nothing of the sort, of course, but might be of interest if you're on a fix and fancy a change of pace. It's a modern take on the 60s Sachs Duomatic, offering two gears, a freewheel and a kickback brake, all actuated through the pedals. Yep, that's right, no cable required, although you will need to bolt that big black reaction arm to your stay with the clip provided. The hub itself is neat, strong, and works well in a 120-spaced fix, offering good chainline, a surprisingly effective brake, and gears -- direct and 138% overdrive -- spaced about right. The extra weight isn't noticeable under way, but the average 700c rider will need a huge cog to get a decently low hillclimber out of it. We'll send this one out with two Sturmey cogs, a 16t for smallwheelers and a 22t for 700c guys. If you're in the latter group, you might want to scroll down a bit for one of the much nicer Sachs 24t jobbies. This particular example is silver, 36h. Contact us for other sizes.

Sachs 24t hubgear cog

DOGGED
£6.00

Remember those huge Soma 23t track cogs we were selling a few months back? Here's the hubgear equivalent, the Sachs 24t cog. Another German company has an even bigger 28t offering, but the Sachs is better made. The makers bill it as being suitable for 1/8 or 3/32, but we reckon you'll do better running it on a 3/32 setup. It's just about perfect for the Sturmey S2C, providing gears of 50" and 68" off a 44t ring, but will work with any Sachs, Sturmey or Shimano hub that has the familiar three dog driver.

Tree 44t 48 spline ring, black

TOOTHY
£56.00

Spline drive is weird and interesting. You know those fat tubular cromoly cranks you see the BMXers riding? Using a 19mm Euro BB, you can fit them on any bike with a standard BB Brit-thread BB shell -- This Means You. Tubular cranks have a number of advantages, especially if you're putting together a commuter bike. You can read the good news (and some bad) in our technote. For the moment, we thought you'd like to know that we have stock of these excellent Tree Light splined rings in the scarce 44t / 1/8" size, making them a good choice if you fancy rethinking the drivetrain of your streetfix for 2012. The Tree is made from 5/16" 7075 aluminium, and nifty girder-section spokes make it extremely strong and stiff for its light weight -- a big consideration given the wide diameter. We think it will become a favourite in this new niche.

Sugino BMX ring, gold

MIDAS
£18.00

Sugino BMX rings are a perennial favourite. They were made to an extremely high standard and they're (usually) 1/8", making them an excellent choice if you're running a 110BCD crank on your fix conversion. Ours are new-old stock, 39t, and gold.

SR/Modolo 25.4mm bars

CLÖNO
Choose:
£12.50

Here's an interesting little anomaly. These are SR Modolo Anatomic clones, but made with a 25.4 clamp. An uncharacteristic oriental mistake? They'd be a good choice if you want to use an NJS quill on the road, or for putting a mountainbike stem on a threadless bike. 44-45cm; coarsely but solidly made (as you'd expect with Sakae Ringyo); NOS and badly scuffed up from years on the shelf. We have loads, cheap as chips, and we're sending them out in straight mail rather than the usual RD so think carefully about delivery details.

French musette satchel

ALORS!
£22.50

Submit

Our first ever cycle bag is just the thing if your budget won't quite stretch to a Brooks Brixton. It's lovely, and just a bit eccentric (what did you expect from Hubjub?) It is le vrai Musette or French army satchel, made in the 60s or 70s from heavy duty canvas and olive-coloured leather. Four grades are available -- this is the absolute primo, meaning no wear or staining. We'd take a bet that it will outlast most modern offerings. It's a comfortable 36 by 24cm, just right for a small laptop and some books. The strap is leather and gives loads of adjustment, plus there's a neat stitched channel on the back in case you want to add a second strap to stablise it while riding. The leather-lined interior makes it fairly waterproof, and it could likely be made impermeable with Nikwax or similar. Out of stock 'til we can source some more.
